AI-Native Software Engineer

Location: Deventer, Netherlands
Department: Development / Topicus Finance
Hours: Full-time (32-40 hours)

The impact you will make as an AI-Native Software Engineer

As an AI-Native Software Engineer, you help shape a new way of building trusted financial software. You are part of a small, high-performing team within Topicus Finance that turns AI from a promising tool into a disciplined engineering capability.

AI is changing how software is specified, designed, built, reviewed, tested and maintained. In this role, you translate that change into practical workflows, reusable building blocks, smart tooling and quality guardrails that can be used by real teams in real product environments.

This is not about experimenting with AI on the side. It is about making AI a structural part of serious software engineering. You work in a domain where speed matters, but trust matters more: financial processes, long-lived systems, compliance requirements and high expectations around quality, maintainability and resilience.

Your work helps answer one central question: How do we build robust, trusted software in an AI-native world?

What you will do as an AI-Native Software Engineer

In this role, you work closely with experienced engineers, domain experts, architects and product teams. Together, you explore how AI can strengthen the full software development lifecycle — from specification and implementation to validation, testing, documentation and delivery.

You design, build and test AI-assisted engineering workflows that improve both speed and quality. You help create reusable components, development patterns and verification mechanisms that make AI-native development practical, reliable and scalable.

This is a role with real autonomy. Not everything is predefined. You step in early, help shape the direction and contribute to what “good” looks like in an AI-native engineering context.

You responsibilities include:

  • Designing and testing AI-native workflows for specification, coding, review, validation and testing
  • Translating AI concepts into working software, tooling and engineering practices
  • Building reusable components, patterns, prompts, agents and guardrails
  • Improving developer productivity without compromising quality, security or maintainability
  • Exploring how AI can support documentation, refactoring, test generation and code review
  • Creating practical standards for verification, traceability and responsible AI-assisted development
  • Working in short cycles to learn quickly, validate assumptions and deliver tangible results
  • Collaborating with product teams to bring AI-native engineering into real software environments
  • Helping define how trusted financial software is built in an AI-native world

As an AI-Native Software Engineer, you contribute to a strategic renewal of software engineering within Topicus Finance. Your work is not only about building better tools. It is about helping define the engineering discipline we need for the next generation of software development.

What you bring as an AI-Native Software Engineer

You are a strong engineer with sharp technical judgement, broad curiosity and a clear builder mentality. You take ownership, think in systems and get energy from working in new territory where the path is not fully defined yet.

You do not need to be an AI specialist already. You do need to be curious, technically sharp, critical in your judgement and fast in turning new possibilities into working software. You understand that AI can increase speed, but that real engineering still depends on quality, context, verification and good design.

You probably have a strong intuition for architecture, maintainability, testing and trade-offs. You care about craftsmanship, but you are also pragmatic enough to experiment, learn and improve quickly.

You bring:

  • A completed bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a comparable field
  • Demonstrable seniority as a software engineer, regardless of programming language
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a pragmatic engineering mindset
  • Interest in AI-native development, engineering tooling and new ways of building software
  • The ability to work effectively without a fully predefined plan
  • A critical mindset and strong sense of quality, security and maintainability
  • Curiosity, ownership and the drive to turn ideas into working solutions
  • The ambition to help define new standards for software engineering

What makes this role unique

This role gives you the opportunity to work close to the strategic renewal of software engineering within Topicus Finance. You get a high degree of autonomy and direct influence on technology, tooling and ways of working.

You will not only explore AI-native engineering, but help make it practical, reliable and usable in serious software environments. You work in a small team with high standards, strong expertise and visible impact.

The role is demanding, experimental and sometimes undefined — but that is exactly what makes it exciting. The bar is high, the assignment is new and there is still a lot to discover.

If you feel that software engineering is entering a new chapter — and you would rather help build that future than wait for it — we would like to meet you.
